Lo que los científicos predicen es que el colapso podría ocurrir en cualquier momento en los próximos miles de años. Los científicos también saben que esto no ocurriría sin algun tipo de señal. La población sería alertada del peligro con semanas de antelación. 2. ¿Cómo pueden los científicos saber que ésto va a ocurrir? Los científicos han descubierto que La Palma colapsará en algún momento en el futuro y en relación con una erupción en la cima del volcán Cumbre Vieja. Las erupciones en esta zona ocurren aproximadamente cada 200 años. La última erupción se produjo en 1949, así que podrían pasar muchas décadas hasta que volviera a ocurrir. De hecho, el colapso no tendría por qué suceder en la próxima erupción. Podrían producirse cinco, diez o incluso más erupciones antes de que el colapso ocurra. Los científicos no pueden predecir cuántas erupciones se necesitarán. 3. ¿Qué efectos tendría el colapso? El flanco oeste del volcán Cumbre Vieja de deslizará en el Océano Atlántico. Se producirán terremotos muy intensos en toda la isla de La Palma mientras esta zona se desliza en el océano. Este proceso también generará una ola gigante (llamada mega tsunami) que se moverá a gran velocidad hacia el oeste. Un documental del Canal Historia de la televisión digital ha vuelto a plantear la alarma por la posible fractura del volcán Cumbre Vieja de la isla de La Palma, que supuestamente provocará olas gigantescas que barrerán varios continentes afectando a millones de personas de América, África y Europa. Aunque no hay ningún indicio de que vaya a ser inminente, el hecho de que Estados Unidos se vea afectado por este eventual mega tsunami amplifica el efecto mediático: diversos documentales han conseguido que millones de personas crean que la próxima catástrofe natural planetaria de origen volcánico procederá de las Islas Canarias. Esta nueva inquietud social crece alentada por un popular vidente brasileño, que supuestamente anticipó los atentados del 11-S de 2001 en Estados Unidos y del 11-M de 2004 en Madrid: dice que el volcán de La Palma caerá al mar en noviembre de 2013. El Canal Historia de Digital+ está emitiendo en su actual programación el documental Megadesastres: Tsunami en la Costa Este (2006, History Channel) en el que científicos expertos en tsunamis explican la posibilidad de un potencial derrumbe catastrófico de la cara occidental de un volcán en las Islas Canarias. Este derrumbe que, en potencia, sería quinientas veces más intenso que el de la isla de Ritter (ocurrido en 1888), podría desencadenar un tsunami masivo. National Geographic ha dedicado asimismo el documental End Day a las cinco posibles causas del fin de los días, una de las cuales es la fractura del volcán Cumbre Vieja en la isla de La Palma. Según la BBC, que ha realizado otro documental, una de las mayores preocupaciones de los científicos actualmente es que el mayor peligro de que se repita un mega tsunami peor que el de Ritter procede del volcán Cumbre Vieja. El diario español El Mundo también ha analizado el fenómeno y explicado los entresijos de la polémica que rodea a la eventual fractura de la isla de La Palma. En un artículo publicado en el año 2000, señala que aunque todos los científicos están de acuerdo en que una nueva erupción es muy probable que ocurra en la isla de La Palma en los próximos 100 años, no está tan claro sin embargo que esa erupción pueda provocar el desprendimiento de una parte del volcán Cumbre Vieja. También señala El Mundo que hay un precedente geológico en la isla de Tenerife y que la isla de La Palma reúne las condiciones naturales para padecer una fractura, si bien es imposible determinar en qué momento puede ocurrir. El megatsunami canario ha sido reiteradamente formulado por algunos miembros de la comunidad científica, si bien otros científicos consideran alarmantes y sin justificación las informaciones sobre el posible derrumbe del volcán Cumbre Vieja. Un volcán inestable. Tal como informamos en otro artículo, uno de los flancos del volcán Cumbre Vieja, de la isla canaria de La Palma, ha comenzado a desplazarse hacia el océano, y su caída -cuya fecha está por determinar- provocaría un desastre equiparable al impacto de un meteorito contra la superficie terrestre, según un modelo informático elaborado por científicos europeos y americanos por encargo de importantes aseguradoras. El modelo informático indica que las olas que se derivarían del impacto de semejante trozo de tierra contra la superficie del mar retendría una significativa proporción de la energía derivada de dicho impacto, propagándola más allá de las Islas Canarias, hacia Africa, Estados Unidos, Europa y América Central y del Sur, afectando a un total de 100 millones de personas. Estos científicos creen sin embargo que el eventual colapso provocado por los previsibles fenómenos de la isla de Palma no será inminente, ya que el volcán no se partirá necesariamente en una próxima erupción. Las anteriores erupciones del volcán Cumbre Vieja ocurrieron en 1677-78, 1712, 1730-1736, 1824 y 1949. Según estimaciones de vulcanólogos norteamericanos, basadas en datos estadísticos, la nueva erupción podría ocurrir en 2017 o 2214. El tiempo máximo que podría pasar antes de la siguiente erupción, según este modelo, sería de 117 años a partir de 2005, año en que se realizó el estudio. La repetición de las erupciones se produce en intervalos de décadas, pero aún así, otros especialistas vaticinan que la rotura podría darse incluso dentro de 5.000 años, aunque advierten que podría ser mucho antes. El diario británico The Guardian que ha alertado de esta posible catástrofe, la considera al mismo tiempo una especulación catastrofista al mejor estilo de las películas de Hollywood. La Sociedad Tsunami ha minimizado a su vez el peor de los escenarios, considerando improbable que, en caso de una nueva erupción, parte del volcán Cumbre Vieja caiga al océano. En septiembre de 2006, la prestigiosa Dutch Technical University de Delft (Holanda) publicó un documentado informe en el que critica los estudios científicos que alertan del peligro, así como las informaciones y documentales que hablan del tsunami de La Palma sin, en su opinión, suficiente base científica. Algunos geólogos de las Islas Canarias, como Juan Carlos Carracedo, también han expresado su malestar por estas informaciones que, a su entender, distorsionan la realidad.
