www.iquiquetv.cl: Esta estación fue diseñada y construida para recibir salitre, mientras que la estación de pasajeros se ubicaba en la entrada del puerto. Con los años ambas se unieron, quedando sólo ésta, donde llegaba el ferrocarril longitudinal, más conocido como Longino, que viajaba desde La Calera hasta Iquique. En las cercanías del sector se erigió una población para los trabajadores del ferrocarril, muy similar a las típicas oficinas salitreras, y que se puede reconocer hasta el día de hoy. Un par de años tras el cierre de la Estación, la Seremía de Justicia se establece y hace cargo del recinto, el que es declarado Monumento Histórico en 1977. |
