Description: Barry Gibb once said:..."There's the top 10 female singsers, then there is Barbra Streisand..." ENOUGH SAID!! Album Review by William Ruhlmann The biggest selling album of Barbra Streisand's career is also one of her least characteristic. The album was written and produced by Barry Gibb in association with his brothers and the producers of the Bee Gees, and in essence it sounds like a post-Saturday Night Fever Bee Gees album with vocals by Streisand. Gibb adapted his usual style somewhat, especially in slowing the tempos and leaving more room for the vocal, but his melodic style and the backup vocals, even when they are not sung by the Bee Gees, are typical of them. Still, the record was more hybrid than compromise, and the chart-topping single "Woman in Love" has a sinuous feel that is both right for Streisand and new for her. Other hits were the title song and "What Kind of Fool," both duets with Gibb. (The song "Guilty" won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal by Duo or Group.) GUILTY Reviewed by Matthew Greenwald One of Barbra Streisand's biggest hits from the early '80s, "Guilty" is a seamless, glossy pop meditation, co-written, sung, and produced by the Bee Gees. The band's stamp is all over the record, and there is little doubt that it would have been a hit from their then-current Spirits Having Flown album. Lyrically, the slightly salty, illicit subject matter is extremely enticing, and gives the song a great, erotic edge. Streisand's voice, blended with Barry Gibb's, gives the song a romantic edge that brought it ahead of the game of many other romantic duet records that would follow. The seamless, slightly funky grooves, as well as a great minor-key shift in the sterling bridge, make it one of the most engaging and attractive tracks from the period. WOMAN IN LOVE Reviewed by Matthew Greenwald An extremely well-crafted pop ballad, "Woman in Love" found Barbra Streisand moving into the 1980s with an easy, contemporary song. Much of this is due to the songwriting and production team, which, for all intent and purposes, was the Bee Gees. A glossy, slightly R&B melody gently guides the song along, nicely echoing the passionate, come-from-the heart lyrics. A very nice bridge announced by a radical minor/diminished key shift adds a great degree of drama and emotion to the whole piece before sliding back into the shiny, assessable chorus. |
