Description: Universal Pledge for World Democracy A personal declaration of intent to create a well-governed world I WAS BORN A CITIZEN OF THIS PLANET, and I share with world citizens everywhere a long-term vision for a peaceful and just world. I declare that we, the people of this planet, have an innate right to self-government; I envision a world in which the sovereignty of the world's people is fully recognized. I have a right to live free from arbitrary global rule; I therefore claim my right to be enfranchised as a world citizen with the power to vote for my representative to a world legislature or global parliament, or to run for global office. I recognize that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, and as such my world citizenship demands the fulfillment of civic duties and obligations as well as active participation in all levels of government. I have faith in the peoples of the world and I fully expect that, working together, we will one day achieve a well-governed one world democracy. PEACE, JUSTICE, AND A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT are not utopian ideals; I declare these to be achievable at all levels, including at the global level of government. Toward this end, I therefore call for the careful evolution of our institutions of global governance toward genuine planetary democracy, enforceable global law, a federation of all nations, and all other appropriate expressions of the sovereignty of the world's people. I also believe that such a well-governed world democracy must include strict protections for individual rights and freedoms through a universal bill of rights. And I declare that I will work to build such global democratic institutions for the sake of myself, my family, my community, my nation, and all of humankind. AS A FIRST OBJECTIVE, I hold the vision of an epochal change in human affairs that will put an end to war. Just as slavery has been declared illegal, I join many others in working for the complete abolition of war as the first step toward a well-governed world. AS A MEMBER OF THE WORLD COMMUNITY, I therefore pledge to help speed the development of democratic world systems that are responsive my needs and wishes and those of all the world's people. I promise to share, especially with the three additional signers below, the truth about our innate sovereignty and our right to self-government. Working with others, therefore, I pledge that I will seize the opportunity to reinvent this planet by working for a well-governed world—and to do so for the sake of this and all future generations on earth.
